Admission Requirements and Procedures

Admission Requirements

For admission to graduate study in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at University of Illinois a B.S. degree with a minimum grade average of B is required. Note however, that students accepted in our program typically have an average much higher than a B. Outstanding students with degrees in areas other than Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (including Chemistry, Materials Science, Bioengineering, and Computer Science) are also very much welcome to apply. Such students may be required to take a few additional courses, as determined by the graduate program committee, in order to help them prepare for the qualifying exam (students in the Ph.D. program) or for the bioinformatics core courses (students in the M.S. in Bioinformatics program).

Admission Procedure
  1. Go to the following address http://www.grad.uiuc.edu/admissions/apply/program.htm where you will be asked to create a PIN and password. Next you will be asked to fill out a number of forms electronically regarding personal information, educational history, etc. Before sending us emails, check the APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS at the top left on the application web site!
    DO NOT SEND A COPY OF YOUR APPLICATION BY REGULAR MAIL.
  2. Pay the application fee online (credit card) at the above web site.
  3. Get recommendation letters from 3 referees. Forms and instructions for submission are available at the above web site after you log in. If not submitted electronically, have these letters sent directly to our department (see address below).
  4. Request official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work to be sent directly to our the department (see address below).
  5. Send a copy of your Graduate Records Examination (GRE) general test scores to our department (see address below, email or fax 217/333-5052), AND request the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send your official GRE test scores to University of Illinois, UC Office of Admissions and Records, using UIUC’s institution code number 1836 and program office code 00.
In addition for international students:
  1. For all applicants whose native language is not English, please send a copy of your Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score to our department (see address below) and request that the Educational Testing Service (ETS) send your official TOEFL score to the University of Illinois, UC, Office of Admissions and Records, using the University of Illinois, UC's institution code number 1836 and program office code 00.
  2. After you are accepted in our program, we will need a Declaration and Certification of Finances form, since this is needed for your visa application. http://www.grad.uiuc.edu/forms/admission/CertofFinances.pdf

For admission starting the Fall semester all materials must be received by January 15 to ensure consideration for any of UIUC’s fellowship awards, and by February 15 to ensure full consideration of your application for admission to our program
