Courses in the language used to satisfy the
foreign language requirement
The foreign language requirement in the chemical engineering curriculum is three
years of the same language in high school or three semesters of the same language
in college. Language courses are those in which you either learn a foreign
language or you improve skills. Fourth-semester or higher-level language
courses used to satisfy the foreign language requirement are acceptable as general
education electives in Category C.
Example: You took four years of French in high school, which is considered the equivalent of four semesters of French in college. It is OK to take the 4th semester of French (or higher) at UIUC and use that in Category C.
Courses in a language other than that used to satisfy the foreign
language requirement
If you have no previous training or experience
in a foreign language, and it is not the language you will use to
satisfy the foreign language requirement, you may use the introductory-level
skills courses in this language for Category C.
Example: You took three years of Latin in high school. You use this to satisfy the foreign language requirement. If you have had no previous training or experience in Spanish, you may take Spanish101 and 102 for Category C.
Any questions regarding whether a foreign language course is acceptable should be referred to your chemical engineering advisor.
Exceptions for chemical engineering students entering college
before fall 2000
The foreign language requirement is only two years in high school
or 2 semesters of the same language in college.
